On Saturday, December 7, members of the Sickles High School National Honor Society joined us for a day of service in VISTA’s Woodland and Cut-Flower Gardens. The crisp, cool morning didn’t slow down their hard work and enthusiasm as they tackled a variety of projects that made a significant impact across the garden.
A Day of Hard Work and Friendly Competition
In the Woodland area, volunteers focused on removing invasive plant species, working as a team to clear space for native plants to thrive. The teamwork and determination were evident as they bagged up large amounts of Caesar weed and other invasives. Their efforts help restore balance to the woodland ecosystem, ensuring it continues to support local flora and fauna.
Meanwhile, in the Cut-Flower Garden, volunteers cleared vines and removed the trellis, preparing the space for future growth and new opportunities. The group also added fresh mulch to pathways, improving accessibility and giving the garden a clean, refreshed look.
To keep the energy up, we hosted a weeding contest, and the PickitPpl team took home the win! All six volunteers focused on key tasks that made a big impact across the garden:
🌱 Removing invasives in the woodland area and replacing them with native plants to keep the ecosystem healthy.
🌿 Mulching garden pathways to improve access and maintain tidy spaces.
♻️ Turning compost to enrich the soil for future planting. The cold weather made this task especially dramatic—steam rose visibly from the warm compost piles!
🌸 Cut Flower Garden Cleanup: Volunteers also worked hard to remove the trellis and its vines, clearing the space for new growth and future plantings.
Team Effort in Action
The enthusiasm, teamwork, and determination shown by the Sickles High School volunteers made the day not only productive but fun. With every weed pulled, path mulched, and compost turned, they contributed to the ongoing restoration and care of our gardens and woodland spaces.
A Heartfelt Thank You
The day wasn’t just about hard work—there was plenty of laughter, camaraderie, and shared pride in their accomplishments. It was inspiring to see these young volunteers demonstrate their dedication to environmental stewardship and community service.
We extend a big thank you to the Sickles High School National Honor Society volunteers for their time, energy, and commitment. Days like these remind us that VISTA thrives through community efforts, and we’re so appreciative of every pair of hands that helps us grow.
We look forward to seeing the results of this work flourish in the months to come!
