Our dedicated AARP gardeners have made a remarkable contribution to our local community by harvesting an impressive total of 36 pounds of fresh, nutritious vegetables for our Community Food Pantry.
This generous bounty included a variety of healthful produce, such as collard greens, which are known for their high vitamin content and beneficial properties; eggplant, a versatile vegetable that can be used in numerous culinary dishes; kale, celebrated for its superfood status due to its rich nutrient profile; and pickling cucumbers, which add a delightful crunch and flavor to various recipes.
A special acknowledgment is due to Steve L., who played a pivotal role in this successful harvest by generously sharing cucumbers from his thriving vines. His commitment not only enhances our garden's yield but also inspires fellow gardeners to engage in the spirit of community sharing and collaboration.
The AARP garden group diligently maintains three expansive 4x16-foot gardens located in the DW6, DW7, and DW8 areas at VISTA. These gardens are not just plots of land; they serve as vital resources in our ongoing efforts to bolster community food security. By cultivating these gardens, we are not only providing fresh produce to those in need but also fostering a sense of community among our members and encouraging sustainable gardening practices.
The work done by the AARP gardeners goes beyond just planting and harvesting; it represents a commitment to improving the health and well-being of our community members. Through their hard work and dedication, they are helping to ensure that fresh, locally grown vegetables are accessible to everyone, thereby contributing to a healthier lifestyle and enhancing food sovereignty.
The impact of their efforts is felt throughout the community, as each vegetable harvested plays a crucial role in nourishing families and individuals who rely on the Community Food Pantry.
