VISTA Woodland Update

February 2024

Our work in the woodland area again this month focused on removing invasive plants, especially Brazilian pepper.  By the end of the month, we estimated that we had removed about 85-90% of the Brazilian pepper, filling the dumpster twice.  We really appreciated the work from USF Rotaract and UT students!

Cristo Rey Salesian High School students also volunteered on a school holiday, helping to propagate swamp hibiscus and start some seeds. They had a scavenger hunt, where they identified and removed more Brazilian pepper, camphor, and carrotwood trees.

On February 25, Rutger Myers from the Denver Botanical Garden gave an informative talk on compost. Rutger is a VISTA alumni, having volunteered here as a teenager.

Parts of our woodland area are starting to look bare. We expect the spring to bring a surprise of weeds, and in March we can start some planting.
