September was a rainy month, and a good time for planting. We planted many purchased and transplanted flowers, shrubs and a few trees. So far this year we’ve planted 66 different species of plants. We were spared any serious issues with hurricane Helene.
With all the rain, we also spent much time weeding.
We left most of the air potato vine to the fate of the air potato vine beetle, mainly pulling the vine when it was choking native plants. We are making a path on the west side of the property to the wet area gardens, which we named the Fakahatchee trail. August brought flowering of mist flower, blue curls to the drier areas, and duck potato, pickerel weed, golden canna, and spider lily in the low lying wet areas.
We enjoyed hosting a field trip from the Suncoast chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society. It’s an excellent organization which provides an abundance of opportunities and resources to learn more about native plants in Florida (fnps.org).
